Project 1 Individual Student Exchange Program

This program is designed for American students to spend three to four months living and attending school in CIS. Participants live with local families and have the opportunity to immerse themselves in all aspects of daily life. Host schools are English speaking schools that also participate in PH's Direct School Exchange Program. The ideal candidates for this program are high school seniors who are able to graduate in January of their senior year and who might spend their final semester in CIS. Their American schools must be willing to host a CIS student in a reciprocal exchange.

Project 2 Teacher Exchange and Teaching Internship Progs. Through the Teacher Exchange Program, New England and NIS educators participate in two-week teaching exchanges and homestays. Teachers work side-by-side to develop new curricula, teaching resources and materials, and to better understand each others' lives. The Teaching Internship Program places American teachers and teachers of English from the NIS in participating schools and institutions for a period of six months to one year. Teachers from Tbilisi and Petrozavodsk have taught in the US.

Project 3 Youth Leadership Institute

This two-year program will focus on the process of democratic change and the role of youth in a democratic society. In the summer of 1992, it is being held in Vermont and Washington DC, with participants from CIS, Belgium, and the US. In 1993, it will be held in CIS. During the 1992 portion of the program, the participants will be introduced to the philosophy and practice of American electoral politics and explore the possibilities for youth involvement in the democratic process. Afterwards, Russian and Belgian students will live with families and serve as interns on political campaigns and elsewhere.
