Gen Purp SCI is a national association providing support and

services to US cities, counties and states to advance their "sister" exchange programs with foreign communities. SCI serves as an umbrella that brings together the many facets of this dynamic international exchange program. SCI works to strengthen communication and information exchange among its members, to provide training and promote innovative exchange of ideas and to serve as a clearinghouse for exchange programming. It offers grants to US cities for the exchange of citizens, youth, trainees, and

professionals, and for humanitarian initiatives.

NIS Role SCI assists US cities in starting new and developing

existing affiliations with cities in the NIS and CEE. SCI will continue to assist cities in the NIS/CEE to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge and experience in progressive and democratic city government and city management, public administration, participation of citizens in community affairs, establishment and work of private volunteer organizations. SCI will continue to work out new exchange programs for the cities and to provide US-NIS/CEE sister cities with more grant opportunities for funding their thematic exchange projects.

Project 1 Assistance to New Parishes & Seminaries of the UAO The Society sends sheet music, church service books, vestments, icons, and other items necessary to conduct church services to the newly established parishes of the UAO Church. It has sent copiers, a supply of paper, church service books and theological works to seminarians of the UAO Church. The project also sent donated dental office equipment which was used to establish a dental office for seminarians, priests and poor people of the Kiev area.

Project 2 Humanitarian Aid to Elderly and Children Funds are being raised in the US and sent to Ukraine in order to provide at least one hot meal daily to lonely, elderly people who would otherwise face starvation. The program started in November 1991 in a cafeteria in Kiev. Now there are 16 cafeterias in Kiev and at least one in each of 13 other major Ukrainian cities are involved in this program. The program is managed in Ukraine by the All-Ukrainian Orthodox Brotherhood of St. Andrew, which cooperates closely with the Society. The Gift program for orphans and poor children is being organized in the same way as the assistance for the elderly.

Project 3 Publishing House "Voskresinnia" (Resurrection) The project has published five books and two are being prepared for publication. These books are sold in the US and are distributed to individuals in Ukraine free of charge upon written request. The publications were reprinted in Ukraine by the publishing house "Voskresinnia" which the Society helped establish in Kiev. Due to lower cost of printing books in Ukraine than in the US, the Society helped financially to publish two church service books in Kiev and the third is being prepared for publication.
